Intro
In
any book for young children, illustrations are essential. They help the child
figure out what is happening in the story. They allow the child to visualize
the words, which is a magical experience. Most picture book artists think and
plan extensively for each book they set out to illustrate. They think about the
media they will use, but also about the composition of each illustration, and
what style to use. For this Illustrator’s Study, I chose to focus on two of my
favorite illustrators: Sophie Blackall and Quentin Blake. Although they both
use watercolor, they have very different styles. In the subsequent pages of
this blog, I discuss the artist’s background, provide an annotated bibliography
of six of each artist’s books, and analyze their technique. Next I compare and
contrast the two artist’s style and technique using a book annotated in the
bibliography. I sum up all that I learned in my conclusion and end with a list
of resources and references I used in my research.
